Finding Your Agency
There are a few tips when it comes to looking for your future talent agency. This is an important relationship, so take the search seriously. Getting those composites done is your first step. These are the headshots and action shots that you’ll be carrying around to show casting directors; they’re your business cards. Many photographers can help you get these done; your talent agency often can too.
Finding a Fit
Like we said earlier, there are many, many jobs out there in the talent world. You could be a foot model or a hand model; you could find your face in magazine ads, on TV commercials or runway modeling; your voice might end up on radio. Or you could go the entertainment route, where live television shows and big and small budget films. Now if none of this interests you, there’s also the wild world of music videos, where you may enjoy dancing on a car or running in slow motion or otherwise getting paid to have a fine time being yourself — which is to say, being uniquely talented.
Now you may think you don’t have the kind of exotic features that sell pants, but worry not. Talent agencies look for all kinds of people with all kinds of looks. So go forth and remember to work hard, find the right people, smile and get ready when the lights turn on.

A screening interview and callback are two different things. The screening interview is a short meeting where the casting director tries to determine whether or not you will be accepted for the part. On the other hand, a callback is a longer interview where you are invited to the casting director’s office for a more complete assessment of your skills. In both cases, the aspiring actor tries to help the director consider him or her for the part.
On the other hand, a call back is basically one step before clinching the part. This refers to a situation where the casting director has already chosen you but just wants to make sure that he has made the right decision. He just wants to make sure that you have the right “chemistry” to take on the job.
Once you get the call, try to find out as much as you can about the interview. Ask the coordinator the names of who will be interviewing you. With this information in mind, it will give you a head start as well as prepare you for the interview that will finally seal the deal. In connection with this, research more about the film, the production company, the script, the part you will play, the other actors and most especially the director.
As mentioned before, most of the interviewing panel will be meeting with you for the first time. So be prepared to answer the same questions over and over again. Be patient and try as much as possible not to get frustrated. Answer them thoroughly as much as you can as if this was the first time someone asked that question.
In a call back, always arrive at the venue a few minutes before your appointment. Arriving too early will make you anxious and lose your cool. Arriving too late, on the other hand, makes you look bad. While waiting, you can practice what you will be saying to the interviewers.
When you’re in the interview, be sure to come across as smart and engaging. Be careful when you tell a joke. Make the conversation light and go straight to the point especially when you want to say something. Do not try to take over the interviewer’s statements especially when they pause because it is most likely that they are just organizing their thoughts. Avoid using “um” and “uh” to fill in gaps in your sentences.
Because this is an acting job, attend the call back prepared. When asked to act out a part, be willing. It is also wise to bring extra copies of your resume, your bio, your screen shots, as well as other documents that will tell the interviewers that you have had acting experience and training.
It is also important to remember each of the interviewer’s names for you to send a thank you note later on. This practice has already been an acceptable norm and it will also make them remember you once they finally make their decision.

Movie extras are those whose roles do not require lots of speaking. Also known as background artists, movie extras are expected to blend in with the rest of the other actors while filming. However, compared to professional actors, acting experience is not required. Movie extras can be anyone from different backgrounds, trainings, ethnicity or of a different age group. What extras need to take note of is that they should be able to take direction, they should be reliable, and they should arrive on the set early.
Not everyone knows that movie extras are outsourced from agencies like the professional actors. This is because it makes it easier for a casting director to search for an extra who has the required specific look for the movie. When in casting, some casting directors also require a certain skill, such as dancing. If you get involved with a talent agency, you may find yourself cast as an extra in some kind of production. However, for extras who are members of the SAG, they receive union scale payments with an extra compensation for overtime work, special assignments, and costumes. Movie extras who are not members, however, are hired only when a specific number of SEC extras have been hired and the production needs more. Generally speaking, extras who do not have a union are paid less than those who are members of a union.
Most movie extras will say that movie life requires waiting for long periods. There are also instances when extras are not needed for that scheduled day.
Extras occasionally get discovered. Being one does also not mean that the climb up the acting ladder will be guaranteed. Movie extras are also separated from the professional actors and there are even rules about talking and mingling with the more senior extras. However, the advantage of being an extra provides you with the experience as well as learning how the industry works, the set rules, the technical terms, and how everything goes inside a set.
You must admit that being a movie extra will give you lots of doors for opportunities to knock on. It does not matter if you want to become the next big thing in Hollywood or you are just in this line of work to earn money on the side.
