An Admired American Writer’s Writings That Were Turned Into Movies

Since 1989, John Grisham has been a much loved American novelist. Focusing frequently on legal fiction, his books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. At the moment of this writing, he has authored 17 legal fiction books with an additional probable for November 2009, 4 non-legal fiction books and one non-fiction book. There have been 10 movies made from his books, with 1 in the works.

His second book, “The Firm”, was the first story to be made into a picture back in 1993. In this picture, starring Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman, a youthful Harvard Law School graduate begins working at a rather underhanded Memphis law firm. In that same year of 1993, a second John Grisham book to movie came out, “The Pelican Brief” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.

“The Client” came out in 1994. This movie follows an eleven year old boy who by mistake witnesses a suicide and finds himself being chased by the mafia for what they assume he may have learned from the dying man. Starring Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and the late Brad Renfro.

Grisham’s very first novel, and some may say his finest book, was “A Time To Kill”. This storyline was made into a picture in 1996 and it introduced an up and coming new performer in the lead character, Matthew McConaughey. It also starred Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Also from the year 1996 was “The Chamber” starring Chris O’Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway.

Matt Damon took the lead role in “The Rainmaker” in 1997. He played a rookie lawyer who takes on a influential insurance company on behalf of a boy denied medical treatment. In 1998, “The Gingerbread Man” starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr. came out. This is the only Grisham show that you will not be able to find as a book because it came from an unpublished manuscript.

Two of the non-legal fiction books by Grisham have also been made into films. “A Painted House” came out in 2003 and in 2004, the holiday favorite, “Christmas with the Kranks”, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, based upon the book “Skipping Christmas”.

In 2003, “The Runaway Jury” came out, starring Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. “The Associate”, which was just released in January 2009, is intended to be a movie release in the year 2012.

With 22 books and another anticipated in November 2009, 10 movies and another projected in 2012, John Grisham has been one of the most creative and admired writers in recent times. You can now download the any of the films that you forgotten and watch right from your computer or TV set.
