Leadbelly: Poignant biography of the legendary folksinger Huddie Ledbetter, master of the twelve string guitar and long time convict on the Texas and Louisiana chain gangs. Cast includes Roger E. Mosley, Paul Benjamin, Madge Sinclair, Alan Manson, Albert P. Chamber, Craft Evans, and Loretta Greene. (126 minutes, 1976)
Law of Desire: Surreal, hedonistic, and comical comedy concentrating on a gay love triangle, with equal treatments of desire, sex, fantasy, and disaster. Cast includes Eusebio Poncela, Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Miguel Molina, Bibi Andersson, Manuela Velasco, and Nacho Martinez. (100 minutes, 1987)
A Nightmare on Elm Street the Dream Child: Fifth iin the Freddy Crugar series with everyone with the exception of Englund just going through the paces. Here, scarred, dream haunting Freddy Krueger (Englund) uses the unborn child of Wilcox to strike at her buddies. As typical, visual effects are a highlight however don’t spare the film from being a bore. Cast includes Englund, Lisa Wilcox, Kelly Jo Minter, Erika Anderson, Whitby Hertford, and Danny Hassel. (89 minutes, 1989)
Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
My Science Project: Laughless, often tasteless comedy in reference to high school kids who discover an alien gadget that can create a time and space warps. Cast includes John StockwelI, DanielIe Von Zerneck, Fisher Stevens, Raphael Sbarge, Dennis Hopper, Barry Corbin, Ann Wedgeworth, and Richard Masur. (94 minutes, 1985)
Lars and the Real Girl: Sugary film in regards to socially shocked Gosling, who buys a life sized doll and treats her as if she’s alive, to the appall of his older sibling, and brother in law, and the neighbors in their tight knit society. Luckily, an understanding physician (Clarkson) guides them in the right direction. Cast includes Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Kelli Gamer, and Paul Schneider. (106 minutes, 2007)
Slave Girl: Story of adventure with a sinister man keeping Americans captive. This film should not to be taken seriously (there’s even a speaking camel). Cast includes Yvonne De Carlo, George Brent, Broderick Crawford, Albert Dekker, Lois Collier, Andy Devine, and Arthur Treacher. (80 minutes, 1947)
The Sugarland Express: Exact amusement, based on truth, in regards to a youthful couple escaping to Sugarland, Texas, to recover their child (whom they decline to give up for adoption), and the cops who chase them all the way through Texas. Cast includes Goldie Hawn, Ben Johnson, Michael Sacks, William Atherton, Steve Kanaly, and Louise Latham. (109 minutes, 1974)
So Dark the Night: Renowned Parisian investigator is set to work throughout his holy day in the French country side. An impressively made B film, something of a sleeper in its time, agonizes only for absence of appeal on the part of its (mainly obscure) cast. Cast includes Steven Geray, Micheline Cheirel, Eugene Borden, Ann Codee, Egon Brecher, and Helen Freeman. (71 minutes, 1946)
